Dr A P J Abdul Kalam (1931-2015)

As the architect of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), he was instrumental in the development of the Agni strategic missile series, Akash surface-to-air missile system, Nag anti-tank missile, Prithvi ballistic missile, and Trishul air defence missile. His vision, leadership, and dedication helped strengthen India's technological self-reliance. Dr. Kalam later served as the 11th President of India and remains an enduring source of inspiration for generations.

Dr V. S. Arunachalam (1935 - 2025)


Dr. V. S. Arunachalam was a distinguished metallurgist and defence scientist who played a pivotal role in shaping India's indigenous defence technology programmes. As Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and head of DRDO during the 1980s, he was instrumental in supporting and launching the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). His leadership provided the foundation for the development of key missile systems including Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Nag, and Trishul. A visionary administrator and technology strategist, Dr. Arunachalam helped establish the scientific ecosystem that enabled India's journey toward self-reliance in defence technology.

Dr. R. N. Agarwal (1936 - 2024)


Dr. R. N. Agarwal was one of India's foremost missile scientists and a key architect of the nation's strategic missile capability. Best known for his leadership of the Agni missile programme, he played a crucial role in the design, development, and successful testing of India's long-range ballistic missiles. Working closely with Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, he helped transform the Agni programme from a technology demonstrator into a cornerstone of India's strategic deterrence. His contributions significantly strengthened India's indigenous missile development capabilities and national security.

Dr. Prahlada Ramarao (1948-2024)


Dr. Prahlada Ramarao was a distinguished defence scientist who made significant contributions to India's missile and air defence programmes. A key member of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), he played an important role in the development of the Akash surface-to-air missile system and the Nag anti-tank guided missile. Over a career spanning more than four decades at DRDO, he held several leadership positions, including Chief Controller, Research & Development. His work helped strengthen India's indigenous defence capabilities and advance the nation's journey toward technological self-reliance.

Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai (1947 -2025)


Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai was a distinguished aerospace engineer and one of the principal architects of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile programme. As the founding Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace, he played a pivotal role in transforming the Indo-Russian joint venture into one of the world's most successful missile development collaborations. His leadership helped establish BrahMos as a globally respected precision strike system and strengthened India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. Widely regarded as the "Father of BrahMos," Dr. Pillai's contributions significantly advanced India's strategic and technological self-reliance.
